O’Carroll Cup Final – Monday, 12th April 2004 – Match Report

Newcastle West   21
Nenagh                    14

Newcastle West defeated Nenagh in the final of the O’Carroll Cup in Bruff  on Easter Monday, 12 April 2004. Played in ideal conditions on a perfect pitch, both teams ran the ball at every oppertunity. Eoin Cahill opened the scoring with a try after he drove over the line. Richard Wall carried the ball from half way and was held up just short of the line but he was able to offload to Eoin for a try.

Nenagh levelled on 18 minutes when they made the most of an error by Newcastle West. However, from the restart, we scored the try of the match. We were awarded a free kick on half way and ran the ball from one touch line to the other before Karl Hayes touched down in the corner. Nenagh reduced the lead with a penalty but John Keating cancelled this out with a superb strike on 31 minutes.

Kevin Lyons increased our lead just before half time with a try. Nenagh made it 18 – 11 in injury time with another penalty.

Both sides exchanged penalties in the second half with both defences keeping their line intact. The game ended 21-14 and Adrian Insley accepted the cup from the O’Carroll family.

Man of the match was John Keating closely followed by Anthony O’Connor, Dermot Madigan and Derek Johnson.
