Newcastle West 31-25 Old Crescent

This was a very entertaining game for the many spectators who turned up in Cullinagh on Sunday morning. Both teams gave full value, running in five tries apiece. We spoke before the game about our previous outing against Garryowen, where we came up short defensively, and particularly in attack where we failed to score. Our attack was on song, Tom Murphy, making his début with the 14′s, ran in four tries. The pick of which was the second, Crescent failed to find touch with a penalty, that Jack Grimes caught on our own 22, Jack counter-attacked running the ball back into mid-field, two quick passes had the ball in Tom Murphy’s hands, and he sprinted down the far sideline, out pacing the defence and touched down under the posts. Killian Collins also got one, from a break down the blind side after great work from our pack. Alan McGrath converted three of the tries, which in the end was the difference between the sides. So although our attack began to click, our defending very nearly left us down again. We gave away too many silly, avoidable penalties, and our own poor decision making and mistakes gifted Crescent with two of their tries. So while this game was a big improvement on the previous one, we still have a lot of work to do if we are to challenge for trophies this season. Special mention must be made of the excellent tap tackle executed by Daniel Normoyle, which Stringer in his heyday would have been proud of.

We lined out as follows; Chris Walsh, Peter Moore, Kevin Sheahan, Aidan Shanahan, Daniel Normoyle, Bartek Kryzsiak, Diarmuid O’Flynn(captain), David Massy, Jack Grimes, Alan McGrath, Daniel Normoyle, Tom Murphy, Eoghan Heffernan, Killian Collins, Robert O’Grady, Noel Ambrose, Keith Begley, Darren Curtis, Andrew McAuliffe, Turlough O’Connor, Sean Bourke, Jack Corkery, Killian O’Donnell, Keiran Carmody.
